BLESSING OF AN EXPECTANT MOTHER

THE BLESSING OF AN EXPECTANT MOTHER

V. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R. Who made heaven and earth.

V. Save thy servant.

R. Who puts their trust in thee, my God.

V. Be to her, Lord, a tower of strength.

R. Against the face of the enemy.

V. May the enemy have no advantage over her.

R. Nor the son of iniquity have power to hurt her.

V. Send her help from thy holy place, O Lord.

R. And defend her out of Sion.

V. Lord, hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry come unto thee.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

LET US PRAY: Almighty Eternal God, thou hast enabled those who have the true faith to acknowledge the glory of thy Eternal Trinity, and to adore thee as one only God in power and majesty. We pray, therefore, that this thy handmaid N. may find in that same firm faith strength in all adversity.Through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.

LET US PRAY: Lord God, Creator of all things, mighty and greatly to be feared, just and merciful, good and loving as no one else can be, who didst free Israel from every evil, and didst look lovingly upon our forefathers and stretch out to them the hand of thy Spirit to sanctify them; who didst prepare the body and soul of the glorious Virgin Mary, that through the power of the Holy Spirit she might be a worthy dwelling-place for thy Son; who didst fill John the Baptist with the Holy Spirit and cause him to rejoice in his mother's womb; receive the sacrifice of a contrite heart and longing desire of thy handmaid N. as she humbly asks that no harm may befall the child thou gavest her to conceive. Show thy care for what is thine. Ward off from her all the evil that her heartless enemy would do to her. With thy own compassionate hand to help her in her labor, may her offspring see the light of day and be a healthy child, who shall live to be born again to grace, and to serve thee continually thereafter and merit eternal life. Through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.

Then the priest sprinkles the woman with holy water and says:

Psalm 66

May God be merciful to us, and bless us; may he grant us the favor of his smile.

Make known thy will, O God, wide as earth; make known among all nations thy saving power.

Honor to thee, O God, from the nations, honor from all the nations!

The Gentiles, too, may rejoice and be glad; a whole world abides thy judgement, and the Gentiles, too, obey on earth thy sovereignty.

Honor to thee, O God, from the nations, honor from all the nations

The land has yielded its harvest; such bounty God, our own God, affords.

God grant us ever his blessing, and may earth, far and wide, do him reverence.

Glory be to our Father.

V. Let us praise the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

R. Let us praise and magnify him for ever.

V. God has given his angels charge over thee.

R. To keep thee in all thy ways.

V. Lord hear my prayer.

R. And let my cry come to thee.

V. The Lord be with you.

R. And with your spirit.

LET US PRAY: Visit, we beseech thee, O Lord, this house and banish from it and from this handmaid of thine N. all snares of the enemy: let thy holy angels dwell herein to keep her and her child in peace, and let thy blessing be always upon her. Save them, almighty God, and let thy own brightness ever shine upon them. Through Christ our Lord.

R. Amen.

May the blessing of Almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, come down upon you and upon your child, and ever remain with you.

R. Amen.
